Jordan Henderson joins Chelsea on free transfer after leaving Brentford
Jordan Henderson has joined Chelsea on a two-year deal after his contract with Brentford was mutually terminated.
The free transfer follows confirmation last week that the England international was set to depart the Bees amid interest from their Premier League rivals.
At 36, Henderson becomes Chelsea’s eighth first-team acquisition since manager Xabi Alonso took the helm, marking him as the most senior player bought by the club’s owners, BlueCo, since their 2022 takeover. Speaking to Chelsea’s official website, Henderson expressed his enthusiasm for the new challenge.
“Given the size of the club, the manager – who I have great admiration for – and the quality of the players, this was a huge opportunity I couldn’t turn down,” he said. “I was also so impressed with how much the ownership want Chelsea to be successful and move in the right direction. For me, it’s about giving everything every single day, both on and off the field, to help the players around me and the team as much as possible. I’m very excited to get going.”
Henderson famously captained Liverpool to their first Premier League title in 30 years in 2020, having also lifted the Champions League trophy with the club a year prior.
His career has seen a controversial stint with Saudi side Al-Ettifaq in 2023, a brief return to Europe with Ajax, and a subsequent move to Brentford last summer.
With 91 senior caps, he was a surprise inclusion in Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup squad this summer and is currently recovering from a broken wrist sustained during England’s celebrations after their last-16 victory over Mexico, a match in which he was booked as an unused substitute.
His arrival at Stamford Bridge, alongside the recent signing of Brighton’s Danny Welbeck, signals a notable shift from Chelsea’s previous policy of exclusively targeting young players.
This continues a busy summer in the transfer market as the club undergoes a significant remodelling under Alonso. Welbeck’s transfer followed the acquisitions of Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace and Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa, while Argentina international Valentin Barco joined from Strasbourg on Sunday. Marco Palestra, Emmanuel Emegha, and Geovany Quenda have also been added to the squad.
This change in recruitment strategy comes after a dismal campaign that saw the club finish 10th, prompting the hierarchy to acknowledge the need for a refocus away from young, inexperienced players.
