Dad dies after getting trapped in escalator as commuters walk past in CCTV footage
Steven McClusky, 40, became trapped in an escalator at Davis Station in Massachusetts after stumbling while stepping off the device, and desperately tried to free himself as commuters walked past
Harrowing CCTV captures the moment a father-of-two frantically attempted to break free from a devastating escalator accident while passengers simply walked by.
Steven McClusky, 40, became ensnared in the mechanism at Davis Station in Massachusetts after tripping while disembarking from the escalator.
Distressing footage appears to reveal more than a dozen individuals passing by as he struggled to escape.
One passenger even seemed to stop and observe before turning away.
Reports indicate that McClusky’s coat became entangled in the escalator machinery after he lost his footing at the base of the steps.
He frantically attempted to unzip his jacket and wrench himself free, but the material tightened around his throat and hampered his breathing.
Moments afterwards, he collapsed motionless.
Officials stated McClusky was discovered “pinned at the bottom of the escalator,” while a report described him as “unresponsive” with clothing “tightly lodged within the escalator steps”.
It allegedly took over 20 minutes before a member of staff arrived and pressed the emergency stop button.
Paramedics administered CPR at the scene before McClusky was rushed to Massachusetts General Hospital, where he remained in a coma for 10 days before succumbing to his injuries on March 9.
In a heartbreaking tribute, his father said: “Above all, he loved being father to his two sons, Shayne and Steven, who meant the world to him.”
The MBTA described the incident as a “terrible accident” and urged members of the public to help others in distress. However, McClusky’s family are demanding that the transport authority “take accountability” for his tragic demise.
His sister, Shannon Flaherty, stated: “That’s the main thing I don’t want – for them to say they did nothing wrong.”
A probe into the heartbreaking incident is still underway.
