Munich Airport closed and flight operations halted over suspected drone as police swarm
Federal Police in Germany swarmed Munich Airport after a unauthorized flying object was spotted close to the major travel hub with flight operations also halted
A major European airport had been completed closed with flight operations halted this morning (May 30).
Munich Airport in Germany had been shut down while police swarmed the area after an object, suspected of being a drone, was caught flying in the airspace at around 9am local time.
According to Flightradar24, flights bound for Munich were currently holding or diverting to other airports.
Police were seen carrying out a major operation at the airport with multiple officers spotted in the area. They were searching the grounds and surrounding area for the suspected drone and the operator.
A helicopter was also deployed in the search as police look to confirm it was a drone involved in the incident.
Speaking to German publication BILD, Federal Police spokesman Stefan Bayer said “Around 9 a.m., pilots made a suspicious observation.”
He confirmed to the outlet that potentially unauthorized flying object was sighted in the vicinity of Munich Airport.
According to BILD, flight operations have now resumed at the airport after around an hour of disruption. Federal Police gave an “all-clear” at around 10:05am.
Police said they found “no suspicious findings” so it is still unclear whether a drone had been in the area and caused brief disruption for passengers.
However, some flights had reportedly been cancelled over the incident. This is believed to be because some flights were diverted to other airports.
The departures page on the airport’s website showed various but not all flights as of 10am local time (8am UK time) were delayed or cancelled.
