Old lady caught by firefighters throwing ciggies at blaze – started by ciggies
Police had to step in after the OAP kept throwing cigarette butts at a burning bar in La Coruna, Spain, after its sign caught fire due to a build up of cigarette butts
Firefighters were forced to call the police for backup after an old lady kept repeatedly throwing cigarette butts at a burning bar that had originally been set alight by piles of cigarette butts.
Local reports describe the blaze as taking place at a popular bar in the city of La Coruña, Spain, with emergency services being called to battle the fire after the bar sign itself caught alight.
Fire services reportedly became aware that the sign had set fire due to a build up of discarded cigarette butts around it, which after becoming relit allowed the fire to spread around the building.
Firefighters immediately began putting out the blaze, and having done so were left gobsmacked when they saw an elderly lady leaning out of a nearby window and throwing even more cigarette butts towards the very same sign they had just made safe.
The woman was reportedly warned by emergency workers but allegedly continued with the behaviour, forcing the fire crew to request the help of a group of police officers, who were already at the scene.
The cops were able to identify the woman, according to reports, although it is not known if any further action was taken against her.
No injuries were reported and the fire remained under control.
The bizarre incident is not the first time smokers and their disregard for fire safety has made headlines.
Last year, a man set an entire petrol station after he lit up a cigarette on the forecourt.
Chaos soon erupted as those who were looking to fill up their vehicles ended up breaking for cover instead.
Fireballs could be seen tearing through the petrol station as customers ran for their lives in the city of Timon, Brazil. No one was hurt during the horrific incident, thanks to the quick thinking of petrol station workers.
Eyewitnesses said the fire took hold immediately, leaving many in danger of being caught in the flames and unable to escape. Authorities in the local state of Maranhão are now investigating who was responsible for causing the incident.
Dramatic footage from the station’s CCTV shows the moment the fire erupted, as a man sits with a group of people in front of the station’s shop. After lighting up a cigarette during the seemingly normal conversation, he then throws the match he used to light the fag away, setting off a chain of events that sets the entire station alight, according to the Sun.
A huge ball of fire could be seen as the forecourt erupts into flames, sending the group of people running. The flames came within feet of a trucker who had been filling his tanker with fuel, as everyone was forced to flee in order to save their lives.
A motorbike was also incredibly close to igniting as it lay halfway between the group of revellers and the large lorry.
Luckily, nobody was injured in the incident, thanks in part to attendants of the station who raced out with fire extinguishers to put out the flames in just a matter of seconds.
