New York Mets fire manager Carlos Mendoza after six-game losing streak

The New York Mets, a franchise grappling with significant underperformance despite a colossal financial investment, have dismissed manager Carlos Mendoza.

His replacement will be Andy Green, effective immediately.

The decision comes as the Mets languish with a 34-47 record, reeling from a six-game losing streak. They currently sit 15 games behind the NL East-leading Atlanta Braves and 9 1/2 games adrift of the final National League wild-card spot.

Owner Steve Cohen, who has yet to see a World Series title since 1986, had set high expectations for a team boasting baseball’s highest payroll at $358 million and was projected to pay an additional $124 million in luxury tax.

“Our commitment to bringing our fans a championship-caliber team has not changed,” Cohen stated. “There is no sugar-coating it: This season has been a disappointment and our fans deserve better than what we’ve delivered.”

Mendoza, a former Yankees assistant coach, took the helm after the 2023 season, guiding the Mets to an overall 206-199 record.

While New York advanced to the NL Championship Series in 2024, the team failed to reach the playoffs last year and is widely considered one of the sport’s biggest disappointments this season.

President of baseball operations David Stearns acknowledged Mendoza’s contributions, saying, “Carlos has led the organization with passion and grace and is beloved by everyone who works with him on a daily basis.

“Carlos’ impact on our players, staff, and culture over the last three seasons has been transformative. Unfortunately, we know we are falling short and change is necessary to move forward.”

Green, a former major league infielder, joined the Mets in 2023 as senior vice president of baseball development. He previously managed the San Diego Padres from 2016-19, compiling a 274-366 record.
