Hisense A10 Might be First Smartphone That Carries a Detachable Color Screen

Every phone forces a daily choice between screens optimized for different tasks. Standard color displays handle photos, video, and apps with ease but can strain eyes during long reading sessions and consume more power. E Ink panels reverse those strengths and weaknesses. They deliver paper-like text that stays readable in bright sunlight and sip battery life during hours of books or notes. Hisense built the A10 to remove that forced trade-off.

The front features a 6.13-inch monochrome E Ink display, which is ideal for hours of reading. Text is really sharp, and your eyes do not weary after a lengthy period of reading documents or novels. Even on sunny days, the display works well, and the built-in front light allows you to read indoors or in the evening without the harsh backlight glare that is prevalent with backlit screens. There’s also a roughly 5-inch color LCD display that clamps onto the rear via magnets when you need some more visual oomph, whether for a photo, comic, chart, map, social feed, or even streaming. This panel is stuck right below the camera and may be removed as quickly as it was put on, when you’re ready to return to reading and lighter duties. From what we’ve seen thus far, it appears like the connection is based on magnetic attachment, with connectors for power and data once in place.

The removable design finally tackles a long-standing issue for dual-screen E Ink fans: those earlier devices were always heavy and bulky, even when you only wanted to read. This A10 overcomes this with a small and lightweight design that remains so even when the color panel is stored in a bag or placed on a desk. It makes color capabilities a choice rather than a must. It’s powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 8300 processor and comes in two memory and storage options: 12GB and 256GB or 16GB and 512GB, with Android 16 pre-installed. This ensures that you have access to the most recent app support and security features right now. Even with a heavy workload, navigation, multitasking, and app use are lightning-fast.

The battery life hasn’t been specified yet, but with an E Ink display that’s known for being extremely efficient, you’d expect at least a few days. The color screen provides some extra charge when needed, so you don’t have to worry about the battery running out all the time. However, the camera is a bit of a non-starter because its primary focus is on the display rather than taking good photographs. Having said that, there is a front-facing camera and one or two rear cameras for taking basic images and making video calls. We’ll have to wait for additional details on these. Hisense intends to introduce the A10 in China for roughly $590, and we anticipate that the removable panel will be packaged or available separately. Buyers outside of China will most likely have to source it through importers and niche merchants if it becomes generally available.
