8BitDo FlipPad Folds Real Buttons Over Your Phone Screen for Classic Portable Gaming, Set for Release Next Week

Next week the 8BitDo FlipPad reaches stores and pre-order customers after its debut at CES earlier this year. The accessory takes a fresh approach to mobile gaming by turning compatible smartphones into vertical handhelds focused on retro titles and simple control schemes.

Users connect the slim controller directly to a phone’s USB-C connector. A hinged component then flips upward to rest on the lower area of the display. Games are displayed on the remaining upper screen area in portrait orientation. The end result is a tiny vertical arrangement reminiscent of previous portable consoles that does not require any additional hardware. The mechanism remains extremely thin. The controller is only a few millimeters above the screen surface. A rubberized layer on the contact area protects the display from scratches and helps the assembly remain stable during play sessions. No side clamps or bulky brackets exist anywhere. The design keeps everything neat and pocket-friendly.

The button arrangement is consistent with 8BitDo’s recognized retro appearance. On the left side, there is a directional pad. Four main action buttons are located on the right. The Start and Select buttons are located in the center region, underneath the main cluster. Six additional white buttons line the sides and corners, providing space for shortcuts, menu access, and custom mappings. The controller does not include analog sticks because it is designed for digital-only experiences.

Early hands-on reviews from CES visits revealed crisp button presses and decent travel despite the small chassis. Reviewers who played emulated NES titles like Super Mario Bros. found responsive gameplay with no obvious input lag thanks to the direct connected connection. The controller is powered by the phone, so there is no need for a separate battery. When the game is over, the hinged panel folds down out of the way. Full screen access is restored for calls, messages, and general phone use. The same USB-C connection that powers gameplay also simplifies the setup process. No Bluetooth pairing steps are involved in the procedure.

Compatibility extends to both Android and iPhones. Apple has provided official support. The adapter is compatible with devices measuring between 100 and 170 millimeters tall, including most current flagships and several mid-range models. Thicker cases may impede the USB-C connection, therefore owners should confirm fit before committing. Portrait-friendly information is most effective. The arrangement is especially useful for NES, Game Boy, SNES, and Genesis emulators, but vertical shooters and endless runners can also benefit.

Pricing is set at $30, which is lower than the prices of other competing mobile controllers targeting similar audiences. Pre-orders will be accepted beginning July 15, with shipping slated to begin July 30. The initial color option is vintage, with a light body and colored highlights on the buttons, but additional colorways may be added later.
