Tramore church ‘stabbing’: Woman ‘attacked at altar’ in ‘disturbing’ incident

A “deeply disturbing” incident has taken place at Holy Cross Church in Tramore, Ireland as a woman has suffered serious injuries after a suspected stabbing while standing on the altar

A woman has been seriously injured during a suspected stabbing at a church in Ireland. Emergency services rushed to the Holy Cross Church in Tramore, Co Waterford, after reports of a suspected stabbing.

The incident occurred at around 9:45am this morning (July 21) with the woman reported to have been attacked while she was standing at the altar of the church.

The victim is reportedly a woman in her 50s and she was rushed to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Other parishioners reportedly rushed to help the woman and alert the emergency services.

The attacker reportedly left the church after the incident but was arrested by Gardaí at a residence close by, reports Cork Beo.

Cork TD Ken O’Flynn condemned the attack as he branded the incident as “deeply disturbing”. He added: “My thoughts are with her and her family. My thoughts are also with the parishioners and clergy who witnessed this. A place of worship should be a place of safety.”

The Garda are now appealing for witnesses to come following the assault.

A Garda spokesperson said: “Gardaí in Tramore are appealing for witnesses following a serious assault in Tramore, Co. Waterford on Tuesday 21st July 2026.

“At approximately 9:45am Gardaí and emergency services responded to reports of an assault in a premises on Summerhill, Tramore, Co. Waterford.

“A female (aged in her 50s) was conveyed to Waterford University Hospital for treatment of serious but non-life threatening injuries.

“Gardaí arrested a male (aged in his 30s) at a domestic residence located nearby. The male is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 in a Garda Station in Co. Waterford.

“Gardaí seized a knife which will be technically examined. Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

“Any person who was in the vicinity of Summerhill, Tramore between 9:15am and 10:15am on Tuesday 21st July and who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) is asked to make this footage available to Gardaí.

“Anyone with information is asked to contact Tramore Garda Station on (051) 391620, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.”
