Freckle Phone Puts a Square Adventure Companion in Kids Hands This December

Parents who grew up walking to a friend’s house without a tracker in their pocket now face a different first-phone problem. Most options for ages 7 to 13 either open the full internet or function mainly as a way to watch a child from a distance. Freckle, revealed today by Freckle Mobile and founder Sam Terris, tries a third path. Terris, who describes his own childhood as free-range, calls the usual tracking products leashes. His answer is a small square phone meant to go outside with the kid, not sit in a bedroom feeding a scroll.

Hardware, particularly the shoulder strap, has been designed with little hands in mind. The Compact body measures around 3 by 3 inches and 0.61 inches thick, with a strong black bezel around the screen, allowing it to endure some harsh handling, as it has an IP54 rating for dust and rain. There are also several finish options available, including green, blue, and an orange-brown hue. On the reverse, you may attach small magnetic charms called dots, which is kind of fun. You can also quickly swap out the NFC cards between phones.

It has 4GB of RAM and 64GB of non-expandable storage, as well as a 12-megapixel and 5-megapixel camera, microphones, and speakers. Terris has stated that the team purposefully avoided going all out on the camera in this first edition since, honestly, kids are more interested in the joy of taking a photo than in attempting to comb through all of the findings later. Story Time allows children to create their own small stories, and there are Maps for Kids to help them navigate around, a walkie-talkie that begins with an NFC touch between two Freckles, and a touch to Pay option with a spending limit established by the parent to use on a day out. An on-screen character wears a backpack and collects small souvenirs from those tools: photos, places, badges, bits of a shared story.

Quests are what they term activities that are designed to get the child off the couch and doing something. You get some pre-set ones, such as a woodland walk, and the parents can also create their own bespoke ones. The idea is that the phone sits silently in the center of all this, which is handy for finding a name on a turtle or checking in before supper, and then remains silent the rest of the time. The first units will ship in the United States during December 2026, with a starting price of $199 for the device and $25 per month for service.
