Surgeons in Vietnam have performed the nation’s first penis transplant from a donor, saving a 43-year-old man’s sex life and marking a medical breakthrough

Surgeons have pulled off a medical miracle by performing a ground-breaking penis transplant using an organ from a brain-dead donor. The historic, life-changing operation was carried out at the Viet Duc Friendship Hospital in Vietnam, marking a major breakthrough for surgeons in the country.
The lucky recipient is a 43-year-old man who previously underwent a surgical procedure to remove part of his penis at the same hospital. Although he spent four years recovering and could still use the toilet normally, his shortened manhood left him struggling in the bedroom, taking a huge toll on his mental health.
After a team of experts thoroughly reviewed his health records, as well as the ethics involved, he was given the green light for the trailblazing procedure.

Associate professor Dr Nguyen Quang, director of the hospital’s andrology centre, said: “In this transplant procedure, we reconstructed the anatomical structures of the penis, including the urethra, corpus spongiosum and corpora cavernosa, while simultaneously performing microsurgical anastomosis of minute arteries, veins and nerves.
“The close integration of reconstructive and microsurgical techniques throughout the operation demanded exceptional precision to ensure the viability of the graft and facilitate functional recovery.”
Medics report that the patient is making good progress, with the surgical site healing nicely and no early complications spotted, according to the Straits Times.

Doctors are keeping a close watch on his condition while he continues his medication and ongoing recovery.
Because the procedure involves complex tissue, experts warned that it will take time to fully evaluate the patient’s erectile function and long-term risk of organ rejection.
Viet Duc Friendship Hospital director Dr Duong Duc Hung said: “This is the first penile transplant in Vietnam from a brain-dead donor.
“The surgical team had to make meticulous professional preparations, establish protocols, study international experience and coordinate across multiple specialities, including organ transplantation, andrology, microsurgery, anesthesiology and resuscitation, immunology and pathology.”
He added that the surgery marks a new milestone in the development of Vietnamese surgery, confirming the medical capabilities of surgical teams in the country.
The incredible achievement offers a fresh ray of hope for patients who have suffered penile loss due to trauma, accidents, or cancer.
Penile transplants remain exceptionally rare across the globe, with medical literature showing only five other cases ever reported worldwide – the most recent taking place back in 2018.
